When I got pregnant last year, my pilates programme was adapted to meet my changing needs. Since returning, pilates has helped me regain my strength and fitness - and is also a relaxing time out from my baby that I look forward to every week.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way for me to get started?

If you don't have any injuries you have the choice of either joining the Beginners Mat class, or coming straight into the studio classes, which use equipment. If you are injured we suggest the studio classes, as these are more tailored to an individual's needs.

What is an "Initial?"

Everybody who joins the studio classes has an initial, one hour, one-to-one session. This allows us to get to know you and your particular needs, as we go over a detailed enrolment form with you. We then start you with the basics of the technique, including looking at postural alignment, breathing, correct engagement of your core, flexibility, and an introduction to the equipment. From there we plan what to include in your "programme" while you are at the studio, i.e. essential stretches, etc. To book an initial, phone the studio to make a time.

Do I have to do the Beginners Mat class before joining another level?

Yes, because it is essential that you get to know pilates correctly from the start, and not push your body beyond what it is initially capable of. If you have done pilates before, you can join a higher level class. A teacher will be happy to discuss which class will be suitable for you, based on your previous level of experience.

What should I wear, and are there changing rooms on the premises?

Yes, we have changing rooms here at Performance Pilates. Clients are asked to wear something comfortable that they can move in, such as tracksuit pants and a t-shirt, but preferably not too baggy, as we need to be able to see your posture and body placement. We request that all clients wear socks, and that men wear shorts that are not too baggy, unless bike pants are worn underneath.

How many classes a week should I do?

Most people do one class a week, which is sufficient to begin making changes within the body. However, twice a week is more effective, and many clients combine a mat class once a week with a studio class, as they each have a slightly different emphasis. Your teacher will be happy to discuss what would be best for you. Ideally, it is recommended to do three hours of pilates per week. We often suggest exercises and stretches that clients can include in their current exercise routine outside the studio. "Homework" certainly can help!

Will Pilates help me to tone up and lose weight?

Pilates is not really a weight loss tool, as it is only a mild form of exercise which is largely non-cardiovascular. However, done well and over a sufficient length of time, it will tone and change the shape of a body, improve posture, lengthen the muscles and sculpt the midsection.
