The History of Pilates
The pilates method of exercise was pioneered in the 1920s by German-born physical fitness enthusiast, Joseph Pilates. Over many years,
and after becoming an expert in activities ranging from skiing and gymnastics to boxing and self-defense, he developed his own series of exercises. These combined physical fitness with breath
control, mental acuity, strength and flexibility.

Joseph Pilates eventually immigrated to the United States with his wife Clara, and established a studio in New
York city. He died in 1967, having developed more than 500 mind-body exercises designed to develop strong, flexible muscles without adding bulk.
He left the He created the foundation for a unique exercise technique, which has subsequently been built upon and expanded into today's pilates.
